“It all really started with Guitar Hero 3,” says Taylor Williams, songwriter, guitarist, and Artist Support Grantee. “My brother and I had the whole sibling rivalry thing going on, trying to beat each other in the game. Eventually, I wanted the real thing.” That sibling rivalry sparked a lifelong love for the guitar. Williams tuned into the school of YouTube, teaching himself new techniques, challenging himself to learn intricate songs, and continually investing in his passion.
The transition from playing covers to writing songs was gradual. After earning a Business degree at UNCG, Williams kept honing his craft, playing guitar for bands in the background. “I never sought out being a ‘front guy,’” he explains.
However, as he toured and collaborated with other artists, he observed their songwriting processes, absorbed their approaches, and listened to their stories. Inspired by those experiences, Williams took the leap to start his own career as a songwriter in 2020.
So, what does Williams write about? “I like to make people happy and write catchy melodies,” he says. His “sad boy songs” blend Motown pop influences with lush orchestration and warm studio sound. With relatable lyrics and rich arrangements, his music tells stories that connect with people on an emotional level.
A pivotal moment in Williams’ career was writing a song for High Point-born singer Fantasia. “I was in a studio with Ricco Barrino producing the track, and it was the most inspiring thing,” he recalls. The experience of working with master-level musicians, horns, and professional videographers was transformative. “That kind of exposure showed me what’s possible and really pushed me to aim higher in my own music.”
In 2024, Williams received an Artist Support Grant to produce a single in collaboration with Charlie Hunter and Colemine Records. The grant funded studio time, music gear, and advertising.
“I’m grateful for the opportunities this grant has provided,” he says. “I’m usually very frugal, so it allowed me to take some risks artistically. It’s also just affirming to see your vision recognized by the support of a grant. Greensboro has raised me and my career up in so many ways.”
