Textile/Fiber Artwork
Arts Access is excited to announce a call for textile art by artists with disabilities for our upcoming exhibition “Rewoven”. This is an opportunity to showcase the unique, powerful, and diverse perspectives of artists who use textiles as a medium for self-expression, storytelling, and creative exploration.
Textiles can reflect symbols of life’s cycles, healing, and creative regeneration. Just as threads can be unraveled and rewoven into something new, this exhibition invites artists to reflect on the process of personal, social, and environmental renewal through fabric, thread, and fiber.
This representation may take many forms—whether it’s the rejuvenation of a community, the mending of a broken object, or the restoration of one’s self through creative expression. One could investigate the theme of renewal more generally or interweave the different threads of regeneration, recovery, and reimagination to demonstrate your unique view on the subject. Renewal could symbolize the cycles of life, growth, and transformation, and how it can be a tool for both creative and emotional healing.
We invite artists with disabilities to submit textile-based artwork that reflects their individual experiences, identities, and creative visions. Whether you work with weaving, embroidery, quilting, fabric painting, knitting, crochet, or other textile techniques, we want to celebrate your work.
The exhibition will be on view and available to touch in the Arts Access Gallery from January 3 through March 21, 2025. A reception to celebrate the opening will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025 from 6 pm – 9 pm at Arts Access Gallery located at 444 S. Blount St. Suite 115B, Raleigh, NC 27601.
About
This exhibition is open to artists who are 18 or older and identify as having a disability. Works from both established and emerging artists are welcomed.
All entries must be original works of art, ready to display. Only one entry is allowed per artist. All work will be juried with the submitted digital image of the artwork by Michelle Wilkie.
Michelle Wilkie is a textile artist and designer of modern quilts. Her artistic practice revolves around modern quilting where she seamlessly blends traditional techniques with a contemporary twist, embracing both Improvisation and Minimalism. Michelle, in the past year, has had her work on display with NC Museum of Art, PNW Quilt and Fiber Art Museum and Mint Museum Charlotte. She has also had 3 solo exhibitions at PAAL Gallery and Page-Walker Center of Art and History (“Eyes Wide Open”) and Durham Art Guild Golden Belt Gallery (“Creating Connections”). She has participated in several group juried shows internationally in France and Italy, and locally (in the US) at ArtFields, CAM Raleigh, TruistGallery, 311 Gallery and ArtSpace NC. She has also completed a summer residency with Ox-Bow School of Art, a 6-month residency with theDurham Art Guild, and participated in Penland School of Craft Winter Residency. She has been featured in several magazines and has work published in the book Modern Quilts: Design of the New Century.
