Most people find it hard to conceive of a plan that won’t come to fruition for decades. Fortunately for Greensboro residents in 2026, the ambitious Downtown Greenway plan has finally reached completion, $54 million and 25 years after its initial vision in 2001.
The Downtown Greenway is designed to move people through the city on a specially-curated 4-mile route. Runners and cyclists are common sights here, but since its groundbreaking, it has evolved into something so much more than simply a path to follow. As a collaborative project between Action Greensboro and the City of Greensboro, the Downtown Greenway serves as an urban artery that seeks to expand economic development and inject creative energy into the neighborhoods it touches.
Public art is a primary focus of the Downtown Greenway, created by a blend of local and national artists. With nearly 50 pieces integrated into its design, the path acts as a self-guided tour, where you can learn stories about the communities you actively pass through. Besides the informational aspect, you’ll also find several functional pieces such as bike racks and benches. Major works also anchor the four corners of the loop, featuring themes crucial to Greensboro’s history.
As it neared completion over the past few years, the Downtown Greenway became a key local site for free cultural programming. In 2025 alone, the greenway hosted nearly 200 programs ranging from nature journaling and calligraphy 101 to candlemaking and “Speed friending” events in parks and gardens along the loop. The popularity of the speed friending series shows the greenway’s unique ability to turn strangers into neighbors, using atmospheric prompts to spark connections that outlast the event itself. With over 3,800 participants in last year’s programs, the Downtown Greenway has proven true its own long-held mission: when you provide free, accessible space for creativity, the community will fill it.
The journey that began over two decades ago culminates this spring with the official Grand Opening. On May 16, 2026, the community will gather at Cairn’s Course for the Ribbon Cutting. This celebration is the centerpiece of GreenMay, a month-long celebration featuring dozens of events that will showcase to residents a little bit of everything that the Downtown Greenway now offers.
Downtown Greenway Project Manager, Dabney Sanders, believes that this initiative is about “much more than just a path – it connects Greensboro’s neighborhoods, history, and community while creating a shared space for travel, reflection, and growth.”
