Since early October, The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro has welcomed arts organizations to a series of four impactful workshops led by Dr. Brianna Clark and Dr. Jessica Wiitala from High Point University. With extensive expertise in communications and event management, these esteemed facilitators are guiding local arts leaders through the essentials of festival programming, operations and logistics, marketing and promotion, sponsorship, funding sources, financial management, and leadership.

Connecting with festival professionals over the past few weeks has been incredibly rewarding. I truly appreciate the enthusiasm, engagement, and thoughtful questions attendees brought to both sessions. It’s always a joy to connect with such passionate industry professionals and share insights. One takeaway I hope attendees embrace is the importance of continuous learning and networking. Whether through association events, workshops, or informal gatherings, keeping connected with industry peers and expanding knowledge is invaluable. I am always an advocate for lifelong learning, both in formal education and through experiences like these that inspire us to grow and innovate in our work.

As a nonprofit consultant serving as Interim Director of Greensboro Downtown Parks I have extensive experience in nonprofit operations and even some event management experience, but zero experience running an arts-based park. The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro festival workshops conducted by High Point University professors have provided a unique window into what makes a successful event, but also how to bring your team along for a successful journey while planning for the longer-term sustainability of the organization and the specific event being produced. We have gleaned nuggets of wisdom that help us cast a clearer vision and have learned very specific strategies for cost containment and revenue generation.
Looking ahead, The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro will soon open festival grant opportunities for the spring. Applications are set to open in November, providing funding to support the arts-based festivals that enliven the community. Be sure to visit The ACGG’s website for more information.
