Rebellious by Mike Wiley (2022)

Since opening in 2002, Triad Stage has produced over 140 Mainstage productions (including 20 World Premieres), 20 holiday shows (including 3 World Premieres), 10 UpStage Cabaret productions, numerous special events and has sold over 610,000 tickets. Triad Stage is known for ground-breaking productions in our downtown Greensboro facility, including a 300-seat thrust theater and an 80-seat cabaret space. Triad Stage has become a pillar in our community and one of the main attractions on Elm Street.

Triad Stage has reemerged this past year as a professional regional theater that celebrates diverse voices, perspectives, and lived experiences through artistic expressions that inspire deep and palpable questions that face our community, selves, and world. Triad Stage is an arts hub for our community, facilitating conversation and inspiring creativity. They are charged with celebrating new work, amplifying diverse voices, sharing the stories of our changing region, and providing opportunities for fostering the arts in the Triad, including a Creativity Lab. They value community partnerships with other arts organizations, university partners, and local businesses.

“I am excited about the new direction and focus of Triad Stage and am honored to usher in programming focused on diverse contemporary stories that reflect our community,” says Sarah Hankins, the artistic director at Triad Stage. “The past months have been full of intense work to listen to our community, reshape our organization, and emerge as a stronger theater. I can’t wait to welcome our audiences back to a revitalized arts hub that celebrates new work and creativity.” The Triad Stage staff and Board of Directors used the pandemic closure as an opportunity to reflect on all the changes in the community and how Triad Stage can step up.

Last fall, Triad Stage premiered North Carolina playwright Mike Wiley’s Rebellious. This original work celebrates the Bennett Belles and their tireless work in the Greensboro Sit-in movement. The show connected audiences with the rich history of Greensboro and offered a new perspective on students’ roles in the Sit-In movement.

With the purpose of increasing access and diversifying participation through powerful and inspiring theatrical experiences, Triad Stage increases impact through expanded networks and long-lasting relationships, celebrates our many communities in ways that reflect the unique and vibrant Triad region, and is building a thriving arts enterprise that is healthy, adaptive, and accountable.
