ArtsGreensboro today announced the recipients of the 2016 – 2017 Teacher Art Grants. The 2016-2017 grant program fund and make possible arts projects and programs in all school subject areas; support the teaching of the NC Arts Curriculum; bring skilled artists into the classroom; reach and engage large numbers of students; and encourage cooperative arts projects among schools, teachers, PTAs and other organizations.
ArtsGreensboro’s Teacher Arts Grant program is made possible in part through support from Wells Fargo Bank and its Arts in Education Fund.
This year’s grant awards total just under $13,000, and range in size from a few hundred dollars, up to $1,500, for arts projects in public, charter and private schools serving Greater Greensboro area students in grades K – 12. Fourteen grant recipients were selected through a competitive application and panel review process that included community volunteers and ArtsGreensboro staff.
“These grants to teachers and schools are a core part of ArtsGreensboro’s work in the community,” said Tom Philion, President & CEO. “Using artists and arts projects to engage and support learning has a tremendous impact on children, and what could be more important?”
“ArtsGreensboro Teacher Art Grants help bring resources to our classrooms that just wouldn’t be there otherwise,” said Emilie Young, an art teacher at the Doris Henderson Newcomers School who will receive one of this year’s grants. “From funding artist workshops to providing materials necessary for hands-on creative projects–these grants make the all the difference in our schools.”
The grant recipients and their projects include:
- Natasha Tyler, Academy at Lincoln, for Cultural Indian Dance at Lincoln
- Aimee Medina, Alderman Elementary, for Bring the Drama to Alderman!
- Beverly DePrez Campbell and Dorinda Carver, Archer Elementary, for Number Drummer Math Through Music
- Margene Patrick, B’nai Shalom Day School, for Glass – the Mezuzzot Project
- Lucia McLaughlin, Eastern High School, for Printing with a Purpose
- Nancy Cravey, Erwin Montessori, for The Shine Project
- Denise Lineberry, Madison Elementary School, for Building Literacy with Clay
- Emilie Young, Newcomers School, for Bring Dance to Newcomers – Multicultural Exploration in American Dance
- Katie Savani, Northern Guilford High School, for Painting with Robots
- Ashley Gerrald, Sedalia Elementary School, Art for All
- Kate Hudson, Southern Guilford High School, for Memory Project
- Karen Meacham, Stokesdale Elementary, for Didgeridoo Down Under
- Michael Crenshaw, Weaver Academy, for High School Filmmakers Training
- Stephanie Allen and Linda Veneris, Western Guilford High School, for Shakespeare Alive!
The funds awarded from this year’s grants total $12,999.
