I have always believed that the most meaningful things we build are not buildings or programs, but communities.
Growing up in Medellín, Colombia, I was a competitive swimmer and water polo athlete with the Colombian National Team. Sports taught me discipline, resilience, and the power of teamwork. They also taught me something I carry with me to this day: People thrive when they feel connected to something larger than themselves.
When I immigrated to the United States in 1998, I arrived with limited English, a deep love for my culture, and a desire to create opportunities for others. Over the years, Greensboro became my home.
That passion led me to Casa Azul of Greensboro, whose mission of celebrating and sharing Latino culture deeply resonates with me. Through Casa Azul, I have found another way to serve our community while helping create opportunities for cultural understanding, connection, and belonging. One of the most meaningful examples of that work has been Noches Latinas at LeBauer Park.
Several years ago, I approached Greensboro Downtown Parks with the idea of offering a free Latin dance class as part of First Friday programming. They embraced the vision and gave us the opportunity to create something that would bring people together.
Today, hundreds of people gather in LeBauer Park on First Fridays. Children dance with their parents Grandparents share the dance floor with grandchildren. Newcomers dance alongside lifelong Greensboro residents. People from different backgrounds, cultures, and generations come together through music and movement. What I love most is that Noches Latinas has become more than an event. It has become a place of belonging.
In a time when many people are searching for connection, the arts create opportunities for us to see one another.
For me, the arts are not separate from health and well-being. They are an essential part of it. When people feel connected, when they feel seen, and when they have opportunities to express themselves and celebrate their culture, communities become healthier and stronger.
